The Young Person’s Collective
The Young Person’s Collective was formed in June 2023 as part of the Living Communities Heritage Pathways project funded by the Gannochy Trust. The Collective’s aim is to increase access to the cultural sector for young people aged 16-25. There are 10 members of the Collective and this year they have focused on creating The Fleapit Theatre , an interactive exhibition which celebrates the last 100 years of cinema. The Collective have boosted their skills sets, which has set them up for success in the future working in the culture and heritage sector.
The Collective make all their own decisions about what projects and events they would like to organise. In the coming year, they will be working across CPK venues, such as the museum, libraries and archives, creatively exploring how these stories told in these spaces connect to their own experiences as young people. The meetings are also a great way to meet other young people who share your passion for museums and galleries and have some fun!
The skillsets acquired during the past year include:
- Time management.
- Building social skills.
- Working with CPK staff on the event, collection, graphic design, fundraising, and front of house teams.
- Event planning.
- Graphic design planning.
- Creating art to the standard required for exhibition in a gallery.
- How to plan and curate an exhibition.
- How to interpret art to visitors of the exhibition.
Although we are at capacity for members this year, please check back on this page in January. Alternatively, please email [email protected] to express your interest in joining the Collective next year!
‘Collaborating and bouncing ideas around with everyone was fun, and expanding on those ideas as it went on. I feel more comfortable in communicating my ideas, also I have a deeper appreciation of all the moving parts that go in to creating exhibits.’
‘I really enjoyed showing my friends and family what I have been working so hard on! It felt like a full-circle moment! I really enjoyed the actual installation part of the planning process. I made everything we had been talking about for the last few months real. I’ve learnt so much! From working in a team/ comprises and organising events suitable for the public. It was an invaluable experience that isn’t available anywhere else!’
‘The Collective experience has benefited me in many ways, including, but not limited to, giving me experience within the culture sector, allowing a professional setting where I can work with people my own age, and providing wonderful experiences to work with people outside of the project while still being within the creative sector. The Collective has benefited me in terms of increasing my pre-existing curiosity in how museums function. Also, I’ve enjoyed the ideas we discussed and the laughs too’.

Collaborations with other places of learning
Fairview School in Perth
We are also collaborating with Fairview School, a place of learning in Perth for pupils who live with complex needs. At present we are working with them to create a careers fair and skills day that is both organised and delivered by them, for other pupils in students in Perth schools who also live with complex and differing needs. This will be the first of its kind, as careers fairs are generally not designed for people living with differing needs, and as a result exclude them. The event organised with Fairview School aims to challenge this perspective and will create a positive atmosphere, where the students are set up to succeed.
Glasgow University
This year, we collaborated with Ziqing Jiang from Glasgow University, to make a short film introducing our new museum. This will also be sent out to schools, to help them plan their visit.
Collaborations with local artists
At present, we are working with a local young filmmaker to promote some of the exciting career opportunities for those who are thinking about working within the cultural sector. The film will introduce many of the pathways within the museum, art galleries and other venues across CPK with members of staff talking about what they do and why they enjoy their jobs. The film will be ready by the end of January 2025, so why not check back with this page then, to have a watch and see if the cultural sector is a place you might like to work!
Internships
Every year we recruit an intern who works in one of our venues. This year, they will be working with our library team for 20 weeks, learning about how to manage our book collection, and working with our vast archive. Internships are a great way of building up new skillsets and enhancing your CV, helping you with your application to work in the cultural sector.
