Culture Perth and Kinross annual William Soutar Writing competition is underway

Culture Perth & Kinross -

The William Soutar Writing competition has an adult and children’s category with the option for children to enter Gaelic entries. This competition is open to adults around the globe, and the shortlisted entries will become part of our library e-books collection, accessible by thousands of people across Perth and Kinross.

Samuel Tongue, the adult competition judge, said “There’s always a lot of talk about what makes a ‘prize-winning poem’: subject matter; form; technical skill, and so on. All of these matter, but there has to be a heartbeat in there too, a lifeblood animating the whole. And there has to be a need for the poem – the ‘why’ as well as the ‘what’. Why did this particular poem suggest itself in this particular way? I’m really looking forward to reading the poems that needed to be written.”

Culture Perth and Kinross are just as excited as Samuel to see the creativity and heart poured into every entry. The William Soutar Writing Prize is free to enter with the closing date for entries of Friday 1st February 2019. First place prize is a creative writing course at Moniack Mhor for adults and the children’s first place prize is an iPad. Entry forms and competition rules are available from local libraries or can be downloaded from our website.
