Perth Museum and Art Gallery is bringing myths, legends and folklore from all over Perthshire to life in a new and immersive gallery experience.
This spring, Culture Perth and Kinross will be exploring legends, debunking urban myths and encouraging us all to recall the things that our granny told us as children as part of a major new exhibition. Perthshire has a rich tradition of stories and storytelling and Perth Museum and Art Gallery will use objects from its own collections to accent Only in Whispers, The Myths and Legends of Perthshire.
This exhibition will be a first for Perth, as it combines stories, myths and legends with a unique theatrical experience. Museum curators have collaborated with Stage Designer, Becky Minto to create a set designed gallery which depicts aspects of a long lost Perthshire country house. Built by Pitlochry Festival Theatre, with sound effects by Patrick Dalgety and lighting by Simon Wilkinson, the team will create an unforgettable interactive experience for visitors.
Simon and Becky have previously worked together on various projects including the highly successful National Theatre Scotland production, The 306 Dawn. Simon brings a wealth of talent and has just finished working on a show within a National Trust property, Enlightment House. “This project has similarities with theatre work in that we are trying to create an atmosphere for audiences and add a little mystery” said Simon. Becky agreed that the project was a new challenge but one that she was enjoying immensely. “We want people to explore this exhibition and hope they are both inspired and surprised by what they find”.
Visitors to Only in Whispers will be transported on a journey through a mysterious house where they will uncover stories through objects, clues and suggestions of places and events long past.
Becky has found inspiration for her design in museum objects as well as from Local and Family History collections of stories and legends. Becky said, “The museum collections are packed with fascinating paintings, photographs and all kinds of wonderful artefacts and natural history items. We hope this exhibition not only tells stories but that it will inspire them”.
Culture Perth and Kinross is certain that visitors will enjoy this unique experience, and will spread the word on the tales and folklore it contains, but only in whispers…..
Only in Whispers – The Myths and Legends of Perthshire runs from 16th March to 9th June 2019.
