A new interactive installation at Perth Museum and Art Gallery this Spring will have visitors young and old floating above the Earth, walking on the Moon and playing in the stars.
Blast Off! opens on Saturday, March 5 and invites young families to enjoy learning together about all the wonders of our solar system as they step out of the museum and into ‘space’.
Among the gallery’s highlights is a specially commissioned cosmic playscape, surrounded by giant murals of planets, where children and adults are invited to build, dress up, read, and spacewalk together through the galaxy.
Created to delight and inspire, Perthshire design studio Fun Makes Good have collaborated with Culture Perth and Kinross to bring a sense of intergalactic, interactive play to Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
Rhona Corbett, Head of Heritage and Culture for Culture Perth and Kinross, said: “Space and space travel are such exciting topics for children. At Culture Perth and Kinross, we believe it is important that the very youngest members of our community feel at home in their museum, and we want families to feel comfortable and equipped to play here freely and have fun.”
Eleanor Young of Fun Makes Good said: “As a big kid myself, who loves play, it’s been a fantastic project to be involved in. I’ve loved transforming the gallery space, and I hope everyone who comes to visit enjoys the playscape as much as I’ve enjoyed designing it!.”
To accompany Blast Off! and for the slightly older space fans, there will also be a new display that draws inspiration from popular science fiction television shows and movies such as Star Trek, Doctor Who and Star Wars. Space: Fact and Fiction will invite visitors to think about what space fact or space fiction is by exploring themes such as living in space, technology, and alien life. The truth is out there!
A programme of events for children and families will run alongside Blast Off! throughout the April school holidays. Details will be available on the Culture Perth and Kinross Website What’s On section. www.culturepk.org.uk/whatson
