From humble beginnings in the basement of the Sandeman Library in 1978, the Perth and Kinross Archive now occupies purpose-built facilities within AK Bell Library, with over 750 collections comprising of over two million unique, individual items relating to every aspect of Perth & Kinross’ history.
Perth and Kinross Archive will reflect this milestone anniversary by holding a month of activities around the national initiative, ‘Explore Your Archive’ with talks, tours, exhibitions and film screenings to be held in the Archive and local libraries throughout the region in November.
The month-long celebration will be launched with a Civic Reception to mark the Archive’s 40th Anniversary, in the AK Bell Library on Friday, 2 November 2018, with a keynote speech by George MacKenzie, former Keeper of the Records of Scotland, looking at the history of the archive, its special place within the local community and its role within the wider archival and research communities. A selection of favourite documents and archives ‘treasures’ chosen by staff and volunteers will be on display during the reception.
Perth and Kinross Archivist, Ishbel MacKinnon said
‘Perth and Kinross has a rich and fascinating past, much of it documented through its historical records. Dating from the twelfth century to the present day, the archive is made up of thousands of manuscripts, maps, volumes, photographs, pamphlets, film and sound recordings – and it is freely available to anyone interested in exploring their past.
The Provost’s Reception on 2 November is a wonderful way to celebrate the archive and bring people together who have contributed to its development over the years – researchers, volunteers, staff, depositors, local people, local heritage groups and many others. I am delighted with the response we have received to invitations – we have an exciting programme for people to enjoy it promises to be a truly memorable evening.’
The cake for the Archives 40th Anniversary was kindly donated by Murrays the Bakers in Perth.
