Culture Perth and Kinross have revealed two new murals in the public toilets at Perth Art Gallery.
The remarkable murals, artfully crafted by Scottish artists Lindsay Grime and Ellietype (Ellie Mills), breathe new life into the Gallery’s public toilets. Drawing inspiration from the art collections housed within the Gallery, the murals represent a fusion of traditional and contemporary artistic influences.
The commissions help to mark the next chapter of the building’s history following its transformation from Perth Museum & Art Gallery into Perth Art Gallery. It also marks an exciting next step in the wider cultural transformation of the cultural offer in Perth city centre, with the new Perth Museum opening in 2024.
“These extraordinary art commissions mark an important milestone for Perth Art Gallery as we embrace our transformation,” said Helen Smout, CEO of Culture Perth and Kinross. “Through the fusion of traditional and contemporary artistic influences, Lindsay Grime and Ellietype have created captivating murals that invigorate Perth Art Gallery and celebrate the Recognised Collections of National Significance that we care for. We are excited to share their work with the public as we continue to foster cultural vibrancy in the region.”
Lindsay and Ellietype added, “We’ve loved working on this project together, which has allowed us to combine our skills of illustration and signwriting. Our imaginations were sparked by Perth Art Gallery’s vision of turning the toilets into a destination and talking point. The murals are rooted in the Gallery’s rich collection, with inspiration taken from paintings of all different eras and styles, as well as some recognisable Perth cityscapes. Some of the typography was also inspired by local Perth shop signs. Our intention was to create a fun and playful environment, igniting curiosity and encouraging viewers to look at the collection in a different way. We hope visitors will enjoy spotting the characters out and about in Perth Art Gallery!”
